The
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
The RCIA is the way
the Catholic Church welcomes new members. It is not a class or a program but
is a formation
process whereby
Inquirers are introduced to the Faith of Catholics. Inasmuch as this RCIA is
an inquiry experience, there is no
obligation on the part of anyone to “join
the church.” A person’s coming to faith is a gradual process which grows
slowly by thoughtful reflection and the guidance of God’s spirit.
The RCIA process is a series of carefully
planned stages marked by liturgical rites in the presence of the whole
community. It takes the distinctive history and spiritual needs of each
individual person into account, differentiating between the baptized and the
non-baptized; between the catechized and the non-catechized. The RCIA also
welcomes those mature, practicing Christians from other faith traditions and
journeys with them on an individual basis.
